General Information and Services
The purpose of the Analytical Cytology Core Facility
is to provide a high quality, comprehensive resource for Cancer Center
participants. The core has several high quality flow cytometry instruments
that are available for analytical as well as sorting applications.
Confocal microscopy is also offered as a service. The instruments
allow for simultaneous excitation and emission and have heated stages
and 10, 20, 40X high NA objectives. In addition, the core aims to
provide a high quality consulting environment for all users, to obtain
the maximum benefit from the technology available.
Data analysis is an important function of the core. All data from
user studies is archived by resource staff CDRoms and maintained indefinitely.
A data management system was also written by resource staff for the
day-to-day operation of the facility. All samples must be logged into
the database before running. Run sheets, labels and billing sheets
are automatically printed. When the data are archived there is a correlation
between the logged-in samples and the resultant data files. Several
computers are maintained in the facility for users to perform their
data analysis. We maintain several of the latest analysis packages
including, Phoenix software, Verity software, Coulter Corporations
and Becton-Dickinson Corp. and Voxel View PC based microvoxel software
packages. Users have access to these packages at no charge.
The following is a list of services offered by this facility:
Two confocal microscopes are available. One is inverted and is useful
for tissue cultures. The other is a direct-view video-based system
which can be either inverted or upright. Fast calcium studies can
be performed on both systems. 3D reconstructions can be made on both
systems using either fixed or line cells/tissue. For more information
